YOU ARE NOT YOUR EMOTIONS: JOURNALING
In my opinion, the best way to move through emotions is to acknowledge them as something you feel, rather than who you are.
This is why my go-to self-awareness/help/care tool is journaling. It’s accessible to anyone, anywhere, without needing any training, and provides a safe place to prioritize feelings, concerns, and fears. You can write pen to paper, or finger to keypad.
The goal is to write until you have nothing left to write.
Many times I have suggested to friends and clients to start journaling and common responses are, “I don’t know how, I don’t know where to start,” or simply a hesitant, “I know…”
Like everything we do, the hardest part is starting.
Here’s a quick start guide:
What emotion are you feeling? (Use only one word)
How does that emotion make you feel?
What events lead you to feel this way?
What would make you feel better/different?
Write it all out.
Pour yourself out onto paper. Allow yourself to come back into the emotional sensations - and then keep writing.
Continue to let it all flow out of you onto paper.
If you feel called to:
Take flame to your paper.
Gather your note or document and hover it over your digital recycle bin.
Watch it burn.
Hear the familiar and satisfying sound of the recycle bin collecting your words.
Feel the release.
